I just had a conversation about this very issue a couple days ago. A friend of mine is going on a long-overdue family vacation with her sisters (they’ve had a really rough year) and her profa told her to take her work with her. How ridiculous! Thanks for sharing these!

My mom says that sometimes “You can complain you have a few months off.” (Um, summer teaching, prepping new courses, research etc…) These same people turn around later and say “I’d never want to do what you do, it’s so hard…”
When my husband went to conference in a sunny location, his prof said “Oh, your wife can go and sit by the pool with her work. I do that all the time.” Kinda hard to get excited when you do that!

Oh man, I know. Because working by the pool is SO much more fun than swimming in it!

Hahaha. I have officially stopped counting the number of times random people I encounter are surprised that summer does not mean vacation anymore in grad school.
